Are you planning a wedding in Central Florida? Congratulations! One of the first steps to making your marriage official is obtaining a marriage license. Here is our guide to obtaining a marriage license for a wedding in St. Cloud, Florida. Actually the process is pretty much the same across the state of Florida. There are time frames you need to be aware of and we have assembled the details specifically for Osceola County. Step 1: Understand the Requirements

Before you go to the courthouse, here are the things you need to know to meet the requirements:

  • Age Requirement: Both parties must be at least 18 years old. Minors aged 16 or 17 may marry with parental consent.
  • Identification: Valid government-issued photo identification (e.g., driver’s license, passport, or state ID) is required.
  • Social Security Number: You will need to provide your Social Security Number, but your card is not necessary.
  • Previous Marriages: If either party has been married before, you must provide the exact date of the last marriage’s dissolution.

Step 2: Complete a Premarital Course (Optional)

Osceola County does offer a discount on the marriage license fee and a waiver of the three-day waiting period if you complete a state-approved premarital preparation course.  The purpose of the Premarital Course is to prepare couples for a successful marriage.

There are different providers and while the content may vary some of the common topics include:

  • Effective communication techniques…which is the basis for any successful relationship
  • Active listening and understanding your partner’s perspective is vital.
  • Resolving conflicts in a constructive and healthy manner.

Conflict Resolution

  • How to identify common areas of disagreement and learning how resolve them.
  • Learning to manage stress and disagreements without escalating.
  • Compromising and building trust and mutual respect.

Relationship Expectations

  • Discuss how to set realistic expectations for marriage.
  • Discussing future goals to such as lifestyle, careers, location and stay at home parents.
  • Trust and commitment as a foundation for your marriage.

To confirm the other specific materials covered, you should contact an approved provider in Osceola County. The Clerk of the Circuit Court’s website can provide a list of state-approved providers in the area.

  • Duration: The course typically lasts four hours.
  • Certificate: You must present the certificate of completion when applying for the license.

Step 3: Visit the Clerk of the Circuit Court

Marriage licenses are issued by the Osceola County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Location: Visit the Osceola County Courthouse at 2 Courthouse Square, Kissimmee, FL 34741.
  • Office Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (excluding holidays).
  • Both Parties Present: Both individuals must appear together to apply.
  • Application Form: Complete the application form available at the Clerk’s office or online.

Step 4: Pay the License Fee

  • Standard Fee: The marriage license fee is $93.50.
  • Discounted Fee: If you complete a premarital course, the fee is reduced to $61.00.
  • Payment Methods: Cash, credit/debit cards, or money orders are accepted. Note that additional processing fees may apply for credit or debit card payments.

Step 5: Observe the Waiting Period

  • Florida Residents: Without a premarital course, a three-day waiting period applies before the license becomes valid.
  • Non-Residents: The waiting period is waived for out-of-state applicants. Such as those who are having destination weddings.

Step 6: Use Your Marriage License

  • Validity: The license is valid for 60 days from the date of issuance.
  • Ceremony: You must have the ceremony conducted within this period.
  • Officiants: A judge, notary public, or ordained clergy member may officiate the ceremony.

Step 7: File the License

After the ceremony, the officiant must sign the license and return it to the Clerk’s office for recording. Once recorded, you can request certified copies for your records.
